MBSD Meerschaum Silver Reverse Calabash Rhodesian Block Meerschaum Pipe

The MBSD Meerschaum Silver is our new series of silver mounted meerschaum pipes. Using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish meerschaum found on our Deluxe series, these pipes exclusively feature silver army mounts or spigot mounts.

While I have spent many a listing touting my quest to bring traditional briar pipe shapes into meerschaum pipe design, there’s still a place in my heart for traditionally “Turkish” meers. The painstakingly intricate carvings associated with Eskişehir and other Turkish locales are, of course, one of the wonders of the pipe-making world. So, I still carry a select few, so long as they are worthy of their reputation. This one certainly is, with a highly detailed floral theme as per Turkish tradition. Aside from that, it’s a surprisingly stout Rhodesian-ish shape, with an amber-hued acrylic stem and a reverse calabash system for an extra cool, dry smoke.

Peterson Pipe of the Year 2024 852/1100 Terracotta Rhodesian Briar Pipe, New

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

If you’re a Peterson collector or someone quite familiar with their pipes, you might be wondering to yourself, “What’s that shape? I’ve not seen that one before.” And you’d be right, this is not a shape that Peterson sold since its founding nearly 160 years ago. It is in fact a totally new shape, the first since 2015, which has been specially designed by master artisan and Peterson Pipe Specialist Giacomo Penzo (AKA G. Penzo) just for Peterson’s 2024 Pipe of the Year. Limited to just 1100 pieces, the design is a distinct, bent Rhodesian, with a vulcanite P-lip stem and a sweeping curvature more commonly found on billiard and brandy shapes. In keeping with tradition, the Peterson 2024 POY is a System pipe, meaning it features Peterson’s famed reservoir system within the base of its shank, which prevents moisture build-up and gurgling during use. The 2024 POY also features additional elements normally only found on Deluxe System pipes, such as its condenser and a hallmarked, sterling silver army mount.

This POY is the Terracotta variant, dressed in Peterson’s signature reddish-brown finish. For those interested, we will be stocking limited quantities of Peterson’s 2024 Pipe of the Year in its other finishes.

Speaking of Peterson’s System, this pipe is an example of exactly that. What looks like a simple, bent pot, hides within its shank a reservoir for collecting moisture produced during the smoke. This is coupled with a ‘P-lip’ stem that channels the smoke up inside one’s mouth so as to cool it and reduce tongue bite.

The condition is very good. Some minor rim darkening and a couple of very small nicks on the bowl. Nothing major, though.

MBSD Meerschaum Deluxe Silver Pot Block Meerschaum Pipe, Briar-Mortise
After the success of our MBSD Deluxe meerschaum pipes, which feature a patented Briar-Mortise system for extra durability, we’ve been developing additional series to offer an even greater range of meers for our customers. One of these series is the Deluxe Silver, which features a mortise strengthened both by briar on the interior, and sterling silver on the exterior. These pipes might be thought of as army mount or spigot mount pipes (depending on the design), with even more of a guarantee to their longevity. Better still, these pipes are made from the same high-grade, fast-coloring meerschaum as our Deluxe and Silver series.
As long time MBSD visitors will know, I’m a big fan of bringing shapes more traditionally associated with briar pipes to meerschaum pipes. In the past, I’ve had Danish-style pipes made, and I’ve had Italian-style pipes made. For the latest batch, I thought it was only fair that traditional English and French makers receive their own tributes. This particular Deluxe pays homage to the simple pot shapes of early briar pipes, such as those of Barling and Charatan, including through its horn-hued acrylic stem. Like those pipes, the pipe manages an impressive lightness, coming in at just 34 grams; unlike those pipes, it also features beautiful, quintessentially Turkish latticework. The best of both worlds, you might say.

MBSD Meerschaum Deluxe Floral Rhodesian Block Meerschaum Pipe, Briar-Mortise

At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

Pre-Kaywoodie KBB Blue Line Bakelite Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

KB&B, or Kaufmann Bros & Bondy, was an American pipe company established in the mid-19th century, most famous today for having created Kaywoodie. The company originally made pipes under the KB&B name, but their innovative designs and patents soon led them to market several makes under the KB&B umbrella, including Kaywoodie, Yello-Bole, and CPF.

Though we’ve had a handful come through in one recent estates batch, I want to reiterate something I said in listings for a few of those pipes: this is rare. Century-old pipes are not easy to come by (the reasons for which essentially boil down to the fundamental law of entropy) and the chances of finding one in a pristine, unsmoked condition are astronomically low. But here we are, with a pre-Kaywoodie KB&B Blue Line sitting before us, yet unsullied by smoke, or just about anything else for that matter. Thanks to the tireless research of Steve Laug and Richard Carleton Hacker, we know that this pipe will have been made after 1907 (the year of the invention of Bakelite, which forms the pipe’s stem) and before the KB&B name was superseded by Kaywoodie. Depending on who you ask, the latter will be somewhere between 1914 and 1924. This may well be my favorite antique pipe to land on my desk so far, in part because of its gold-plated filigree, and in part because the grain is just lovely. The aesthetic qualities of briar were far less appreciated during the time this one was made, so finding one with such beautiful bird’s-eye patterns is a real treat.

As indicated, this KB&B Blue Line is completely unsmoked, and comes in its original clam-shell case. The latter shows some slight wear, but nothing major. One thing I will say is that, if the buyer does intend to smoke it, please be extra careful with the tenon and the stem. Bone and Bakelite are a little more fragile than, for example, the Delrin and ebonite or acrylic commonly used in pipe manufacture today.
