WO Larsen Straight Grain 3 Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Out of stock
Description
WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.
The “Straight Grain” models were WO Larsen’s finest pipes, being handmade, from beginning to end, by only the most skilled craftsmen in the workshop. For “Select” grade pipes, this would be a team effort, with turning bowls, cutting stems, and finishing being handled separately. Only the Straight Grain pipes would be made by a sole carver, typically by Sven Knudsen, Former, Tonni Nielsen, Teddy Knudsen, or Benni Jorgensen, depending on the current staff roster. This particular Straight Grain, a grade “3,” is a beautiful, distinctly Danish Dublin, with a flaring, almost trumpet-like, bowl and a long, slender shank and stem. The bowl looks to have furthermore been contrast stained to accentuate the grain patterns of the briar.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and slightly faint, though legible, stamping.
