Description
WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.
The Largo has an interesting place in the history of WO Larsen, one that is yet to be fully explored by historians of the great Danish pipe house. When WO Larsen first started selling pipes, they carried handmade briars from the first significant artisans of the Scandinavian tradition, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Poul Rasmussen, and Peter Brakner. Their early catalogs reflected this, but they also had a section near the end for the “Largo” pipe. The Largo was a more modest price, and from looking at the models offered, I’ve a sneaking suspicion that these were originally made for WO Larsen by Bari. This is not one of those pipes. Instead, this one was made as part of what was called “The Largo Collection,” a limited edition, commemorative run of WO Larsen pipes. There were a few different shapes offered but, unlike the very last WO Larsen pipes, these were handmade, with each featuring a horn accent and an ebonite stem. Only 500 were made, with this being number 350.
The condition is very good. Slight rim darkening and a little wear to the horn accent.
