WO Larsen 6 Smooth Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description

WO Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.

Based on the grain, the design, and what appears to be a grade number in the stamping, I’d find it hard to believe that this isn’t a Straight Grain, possibly one by Former or Tonni. And as the stamping is a little faded, I do wonder whether the Straight Grain stamp typically found on the top of the shank end might have been buffed off. I can only speculate. In any case, it’s a beautiful pipe; a prime example of a distinctly Danish, straight grained brandy, with a stepped vulcanite stem to add to its Scandinavian charm.

The condition is very good. As mentioned, the stamping is a little faint, and there is some moderate darkening and a spot of char on the rim, but the pipe has nevertheless been well preserved. It also comes with its original leather sleeve.
