Over the last decade or so, Indonesia has produced some impressive pipe-makers in the artisan scene. West Java’s Wandi Riyadi was one of the first to receive major international acclaim, inspiring many more of his compatriots to take up the craft – something that we at MBSD, having carried a couple of talented Indonesian artisans, know first hand. Riyadi’s work has been inspired by Scandinavinan masters, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Lars Ivarsson, Bo Nordh, and Jess Chonowitch, and the Japanese master Hiroyuki Tokutomi, a debt to the world of pipes that he has paid back by influencing younger generations of artisans, both at home and abroad.

As with any other industry or artistic field, pipe design is defined by precedents. Innovations arise and attain recognition and success, and these innovations are interpreted and re-interpreted by others in a manner not unlike biological evolution. The Anglo-French style of pipe making has its billiards and bulldogs, while the Scandinavian style has shapes like this one. It is a horn, by internationally acclaimed artisan Wandi Riyadi, and like so many essential shapes within the Scandinavian-style, its precedent was set by the great Bo Nordh. Yet this horn is not the one most commonly associated with Nordh, that being the “Oliphant” shape co-pioneered with Sixten Ivarsson. Instead, it is much closer to lesser-known horn-like designs from Nordh, such as the “Seahorse” or “Half Note.” Riyadi’s re-interpretation rivals even the originals in its beauty, taking full advantage of cross-grain—as Nordh also often did—to create something that looks fluid and almost in motion. The pipe’s Elforyn (also known as Ivorite) ferrule, contrasting as it does with with the golden brown stain of its bowl and its black ebonite stem is, also, an excellent addition.
