Description
Over the last decade or so, Indonesia has produced some impressive pipe-makers in the artisan scene. West Java’s Wandi Riyadi was one of the first to receive major international acclaim, inspiring many more of his compatriots to take up the craft – something that we at MBSD, having carried a couple of talented Indonesian artisans, know first hand. Riyadi’s work has been inspired by Scandinavinan masters, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Lars Ivarsson, Bo Nordh, and Jess Chonowitch, and the Japanese master Hiroyuki Tokutomi, a debt to the world of pipes that he has paid back by influencing younger generations of artisans, both at home and abroad.
While many of Wandi Riyadi’s designs evoke the shapes and styles of the aforementioned great Scandinavian pipe makers, this one leans much more closely to traditional briar staples—though, it must be said, not completely. The pipe resembles a slightly scaled down version of a bent billiard, but for its subtly bulbous, egg-like bowl, accentuated both by the truncated proportions of the rest of the pipe and by a distinct rounding out of the base of the bowl, effecting a clearer segmentation from the shank. If there is a forebear to be identified here, it is not a Scandinavian, but a German: Ingo Garbe. Like Garbe, Riyadi here shows off a quite breathtaking ability to breathe new life into classic shapes, through a combination of relatively modest design revisions and the most extraordinary attentiveness to the grain of his medium.
