Viprati Extra Magnum Sandblasted Dublin Sitter Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description

Much like in Denmark or Japan, many of the great names in Italian artisan pipe-making got their start working for other greats in their famous workshops. This was the case for artisans such as Giancarlo Guidi, Luigi Radice, Sergio Ascorti, and Maurizio Tombari. Luigi Viprati, on the other hand, is one of the few self-taught Italian pipe-makers of the 20th century to have reached the same heights as such contemporaries. First picking up the craft in 1972, Viprati would ultimately become one of the defining names in Italian pipes, which he remains to this day.

Like Ser Jacopo’s Maxima and Castello’s Great Line and Big Line, Luigi Viprati uses a special designation for his magnum-sized pipes, though one simpler than most: Extra. As all Viprati pipes are unique, the over-sized proportions can vary in exactly where they are expressed. Some pipes are very tall, some are very wide, some are very long, and some, like this one, are a mix of each. At nearly 7 and a half inches in length, this pipe would be impressive enough already, but it is also a sitter, which is one heck of a feat of engineering. The pipe is also just beautiful, with tight ring grain sandblasting, an ornate silver mount, and a stem with an exotic wood inlay.

The condition is good. Some wear to the rim, minor handling marks and a slightly over-buffed wood stem inlay.
