Vauen McRooty 11 Smooth Straight Billiard Estate Briar Pipe Unsmoked, 9mm [SOLD]

Out of stock

Description

Vauen stems from Germany’s oldest tobacco pipe manufacturing company, tracing its roots back to the founding partnership of Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener in Nuremberg, 1848. Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day.

Vauen’s ‘McRooty’ has undergone a number of changes to its shapes and finish over the decades, but this one is definitely my favorite (a shame considering that this version was also ultimately discontinued and succeeded by another). Not that you need me to point it out, but just look at that grain. The bird’s-eye patterns are just magnificent, and the stain Vauen used has allowed the briar underneath to absolutely sing. As for the shape, I’d call it a German take on the classical French Maigret. In other words, it’s a distinctly muscular billiard – even more so than the French one – that’s also been shortened slightly to further add to its stout aesthetic. As evinced by the white dot, or weißer Punkt, on its stem (not to be confused with Dunhill’s White Spot), the McRooty is one of Vauen’s higher end lines, most of which have historically only been sold in Europe.

This McRooty is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help with the break-in process. The pipe also comes with its original box and sleeve – which are a little weathered, so I’ve reduced the price a little. As with most Vauen pipes, this one is chambered for 9mm filters as standard, but the pipe would likely accommodate an adapter of some variety for non-filtered use.
