Vauen by Barontini 160 Smooth Bent Pot Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm [SOLD OUT]

Out of stock

Description

Vauen stems from Germany’s oldest tobacco pipe manufacturing company, tracing its roots back to the founding partnership of Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener in Nuremberg, 1848. Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day.

Strangely enough, this Vauen reminds me a little of Sixten Ivarsson’s shape 11 pot shape for Stanwell. Rather than Ivarsson, however, this Vauen was designed for the make by Italy’s Caesare Barontini. The Italian influence is certainly evident in its strawberry-blonde stain, which helps to bring out a nice mixture of straight grain and bird’s-eye patterns in the briar’s grain. I particularly like the beveled rim, which was once more common in pipe-making, but is rarer to see these days.

This Vauen is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. It also comes with its original box and sleeve. As with most Vauen pipes, it is chambered for 9mm filters, such as Vauen’s own, or Savinelli’s balsa wood filters. Adapters can be purchased, however, which would allow the pipe to be smoked just as well without one.
