Vauen 6873 Smooth Bent Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm

Description

Vauen stems from Germany’s oldest tobacco pipe manufacturing company, tracing its roots back to the founding partnership of Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener in Nuremberg, 1848. Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day.

I’m not sure when the shape was designed, but I see many similarities between this pipe and those of the 20th century Danish masters – Chonowitsch, Anne Julie, Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier of S. Bang, etc. I’d have to imagine that Vauen, like many pipe companies across the world, saw the explosion of interest in Danish pipe design from the 1970s onward and decided to join in. I don’t blame them. This 6873 is a fitting homage to the Danes, while remaining somewhat classical, evoking not only Denmark but the swan-necked, egg and brandy shapes of older English and Irish pipe-making. Speaking of Ireland, this Vauen has an original P-lip style stem, which Vauen, just like makes such as Savinelli, Hilson, or WDC, have also explored in their pipes. When combined with a filter, I imagine this pipe provides some of the coolest smokes around.

This Vauen is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. It also comes with its original box and sleeve. As indicated, and as with most Vauen pipes, it is chambered for 9mm filters, such as Vauen’s own, or Savinelli’s balsa wood filters. It would likely accommodate an adapter if one prefers using it without a filter, though.
