Vauen 3030 Smooth Bent Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm
Out of stock
Description
Vauen stems from Germany’s oldest tobacco pipe manufacturing company, tracing its roots back to the founding partnership of Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener in Nuremberg, 1848. Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day.
Though it stays relatively close to classical shaping cues, there is nonetheless something subtly modern about this Vauen. This is most evident from the bowl, which is not quite circular, but it instead is a kind of rounded diamond shape. It reminds me a little of the very early Stanwell and W.O. Larsen shapes, oddly enough. In any case, it’s a beautiful pipe considered on its own merit, with its distinct design working well to accentuate a wealth of bird’s-eye grain.
This Vauen is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original sleeve. As with most Vauens, it is chambered to accommodate 9mm filters, whether these be the activated charcoal, meerschaum, or balsa variety, or indeed a non-filter adapter if preferred.
Note that this Vauen has a reverse tenon, with the tenon being part of the shank and the “mortise” being within the stem itself—though this doesn’t change anything and was likely simply done for the sake of practicality during its design.
