Tom Eltang Saturn Partially Sandblasted Cherrywood Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description

In the world of pipes, Tom Eltang needs no introduction. I will, however, give one anyway, if just as a reminder. Eltang made his first pipe from a Pipe-Dan hobby kit at the age of 11. At age 16, he apprenticed under the legendary Anne Julie, before moving on to work for Pipe-Dan three years later. Three years after that, Eltang began working for Stanwell. Through these formative experiences with major Danish pipe-making institutions, Eltang cultivated the skills and creativity that would see him emerge as one of the figureheads of Danish artisan pipe-making scene. In terms of influence, it is perhaps only Sixten Ivarsson who has had a comparable impact on the world of hand made pipes.

As someone thoroughly captivated by tobacco pipes, I am frequently excited to find the latest batch of estates land on my desk. But there are few pipes that excite me as much as an unsmoked Tom Eltang. Today is, therefore, a very good day. Here we have a highly distinctive rendition of one of Eltang’s signature fascinations, the cherrywood (though it could also be considered a poker, as Eltang’s renditions do tend to blur that line). In contrast to Eltang’s more recent, poker-cherrywood designs, this one is a real, multifarious hybrid, blending elements of the Dublin, the cherrywood, and even a tiny bit of the calabash, owing to its broad, convex rim, which is partitioned from the rest of the bowl by its smooth finish. This finish allows the rim to be a veritable halo of bird’s-eye sheen, sitting atop a pillar of evenly spaced, ring grain sandblasting. The pipe is collared at its shank end by a touch of silver, ending with a stem of hand cut ebonite.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
