Description
In the world of pipes, Tom Eltang needs no introduction. I will, however, give one anyway, if just as a reminder. Eltang made his first pipe from a Pipe-Dan hobby kit at the age of 11. At age 16, he apprenticed under the legendary Anne Julie, before moving on to work for Pipe-Dan three years later. Three years after that, Eltang began working for Stanwell. Through these formative experiences with major Danish pipe-making institutions, Eltang cultivated the skills and creativity that would see him emerge as one of the figureheads of Danish artisan pipe-making scene. In terms of influence, it is perhaps only Sixten Ivarsson who has had a comparable impact on the world of handmade pipes.
The Stokkebye family, who own one of Denmark’s most prominent tobacco companies, have something of a tradition of enlisting contemporary masters make pipes for them under the Stokkebye name. Peter Stokkebye had pipes made, most famously, by Jorgen Larsen. Erik Stokkebye, Peter’s son, has pipes for his own “4th Generation” brand made by figures as diverse as Denmark’s Peder Jeppesen and Italy’s Ascorti family. And, in 2014, Erik Stokkebye began contracting other, highly regarded pipe-makers to craft a limited edition, Pipe of the Year series. The very first of these annual releases was created by none other than Tom Eltang, and was based on one of his signature shapes: the Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen himself was a pioneer within Denmark’s functionalist school of architecture; Eltang’s Arne was influenced in part by the pipes that Jacobsen preferred to smoke, and in part by the functionalist design ethos. The result is a slender, lightweight Dublin shape, often with a ferrule of some kind—in this instance, horn. Only 50 of Eltang’s 2014 4th Generation Pipe of the Year models were ever made.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original wooden presentation box, leather sleeve, and certificate of authenticity.
