Description

There are certain places that are renowned for their pipe-makers. In Denmark, Copenhagen is often recognized as the country’s pipe-making capitol, due to its historic workshops, such as Suhr’s, Pibe Dan, and W. O Larsen. But it is not only Copenhagen that gave the world its Danish pipe-making superstars. The town of Svendborg in south-east Denmark was also home to many contemporary icons, several of them having made pipes for the company bearing the town’s name: Svendborg. Created by Jens Tao Nielsen and Poul Ilsted Bech, Svendborg pipes were at the forefront of the Danish pipe design movement, with other carvers for the make including Henrik Jørgensen (known as Jan Hansen), Kaj Rasmussen, and Jan Harry Seiffert.

I’ve listed this pipe as a Dublin for simplicity’s sake, but it is probably closer to an acorn or a strawberry. It has a tall, conical bowl and a slightly bent, ebonite stem. The grain on the pipe is absolutely marvelous, with the bowl covered in bird’s-eye briar patterns. While the pipe has been smoked, it would be very difficult to say so without inspecting the pipe very closely. In other words, it is remarkably preserved, and shines with a chatoyant glow.

The pipe is drilled to accommodate 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s balsa filters, but as the opening is only 6mm, it smokes perfectly well without a filter too.
