Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Around 1992, Tom Eltang designed a distinct reinterpretation of the classic English large billiard, with a faceted hexagonal shank. In fact, I’m fairly sure the design was based on certain pipes released under his own name, but in any case, this was Stanwell’s shape 190, which was so beloved that it was even featured as a model in the 50th Jubilee six pipe set Stanwell released soon after. Following the success of the 190, Stanwell commissioned Tom Eltang to design six more shapes, each with hexagonal shanks, and which were released as part of the “Sixtus” (“six” in Latin). This 208 is one of those pipes. It’s a longer, more slender deviation from the original 190. It looks to be wearing the black-brown contrast sandblast Relief finish.
The condition is fair. Some rim darkening and finish fading on the bowl.
