Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
I’ve said it before: I do love a pipe with a story, and this pipe has a real story to it. See, back in 1942, Poul Nielsen and his colleagues founded a pipe company in Kyringe, Denmark. This company wasn’t called “Stanwell,” however. It was instead called “Kyringe.” The company started out making pipes out of beech wood due to a briar shortage, but eventually started offering Kyringe-brand briars. These briars were not the “Danish” style we’ve come to associate with Stanwell, either. They were, instead, inspired by the great English and French makes, and were modeled on such. Poul Nielsen changed the Kyringe company name to Stanwell in 1945, but it was not until the later 1940s that the brand was registered as a trademark and, with Sixten Ivarsson’s help, the Stanwell factory started producing distinctly Danish pipes. In 2007, Stanwell celebrated 65 years in the pipe business (including the Kyringe years), and released limited number of pipes modeled after the very first shape created by Poul Nielsen and his colleagues. Some were in beech, others were in briar. This is the briar version: a compact, lightweight bulldog in the Anglo-French style that Nielsen was, at the time, so fond of.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening.
