Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Stanwell’s shape “97” Liverpool is, oddly enough, one of Stanwell’s oldest shapes, and one that has stood the test of time amidst the boom of unconventional designs that Stanwell would come to be known for. It first appeared around the late 1950s and has been a more or less constant fixture in Stanwell’s production ever since, even outliving (as far as I’m aware), the flagship “Liverpool” (later becoming the shape 220) in Stanwell’s Specialty Series of the late 1980s and 1990s. This 97 was part of Stanwell’s Night & Day line which, rather than accenting designs with metals, acrylics, or the like, utilized a two-tone color scheme to a similar effect. As can be seen here, most of the pipe was dressed in a walnut contrast stain, with a “band” of a lighter tan at its shank and “capping” its rim. Based on the stamping and acrylic stem, this pipe will have been made between 1998 and 2009, in Stanwell’s Borup factory in Denmark. The condition is good. Some darkening and general wear to the rim.
