Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Stanwell’s shape “190” debuted in 1992, having been designed by Tom Eltang. It appears that it was was so popular that Stanwell not only included it in their flagship shapes for the 1992 Jubilee collection, but also asked Eltang to create a series of similar designs as part of the “Sixtus” series. What the Sixtus shapes had in common, and what is the most distinguishing feature of this 190, is a faceted, hexagonal shank. It’s a subtle addition to the overall design, but it allows for a novel rendition of what would otherwise be a very traditional Maigret billiard. The pipe also features a brass collar and an ebonite stem. As per our Stanwell pipes dating guide, this will be a circa-1975-1998 manufacture.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening and a slightly over-reamed chamber.
