Stanwell Hypnotic Sandblasted Cutty Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

If memory serves, the “Hypnotic” was one of the last new lines to be introduced by Stanwell before the company moved its factory from Denmark to Italy. I’m not sure if the line continued after that, but this one is Danish made, from Stanwell’s famous Borup factory. As for the name, these pipes featured acrylic shank extensions in various colors—such as this one’s amber-like accent—which were indeed very alluring. The shape, while not stamped, appears to either be a non-churchwarden rendition of the Hans Christian Andersen model 1, or the the cutty designed by Tom Eltang for Stanwell’s 1992 Pipe of the Year. Stanwell does, from time to time, reuse stummels from special edition pipes, so that might have been where this one came from. In any case, it sure does wear a beautiful, ring grain blast.

The condition is good. Some darkening and slight charring on the rim.
