Stanwell Hans Christian Andersen Smooth Cutty Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Like many established pipe makes, Stanwell celebrates its national heritage through its pipes. While Dunhill has Dickens and Savinelli has da Vinci, Stanwell has Hans Christian Andersen. Andersen was, of course, a Danish author, best known for his fairy tales, such as those of The Ugly Duckling and of Thumbelina. This particular Hans Christian Andersen is the original model Stanwell released to honor the great Dane. It was the first in the HCA series, and as far as I’m aware, it was designed, as with the other HCA pipes of that era, by the legendary Danish artisan Karl Erik. It is a long, sleek, cutty shape, with a silver and brass trim and plenty of nice bird’s-eye grain. Per our Stanwell pipes dating guide on the main MBSD hub, this pipe is a pre-2010, Danish-made Stanwell.

The condition is excellent. Gently pre-smoked.
