Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Since at least the 1950s, Stanwell has offered “Featherweight” pipes—albeit with far less regularity than other lines—which have typically been scaled down, lightweight versions of shapes in the corresponding catalogs of the time. This particular Featherweight is one of the more recent iterations of the series, and Stanwell enthusiasts will likely recognize it as one of their most iconic and enduring shapes: the 11 pot, originally designed by Sixten Ivarsson. This 242 was a re-design of the shape by Tom Eltang, someone equally renowned for his functionalist proclivities. Last I checked, this iteration of the Featherweight series has long been discontinued, with no sign of it, or any new iteration, returning any time soon.
The condition is fair. Darkening and some charring on the rim, and general finish fading.
