Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Stanwell introduced a separate category of “featherweight” pipes all the way back in the 1950s, but it was not until many decades later that the Featherweight line was put into regular production. The principle was the same, however: having a set of popular Stanwell shapes that had been scaled down so that they would be extremely lightweight. This Featherweight is from the latter line, the designs for which Stanwell commissioned long-time collaborator Tom Eltang. This one, the 200, is Eltang’s ultra-light reinterpretation of a much older Stanwell shape, however, the 1960s quarter-bent, wide Dublin first created for Stanwell by the legendary Sixten Ivarsson. The grain on this one is superb and, had it been part of Stanwell’s standard output, I’d imagine it would have attained a flame grain grade (as far as I’m aware, Featherweights were only “graded” in terms of their finish). On a final note, this Stanwell will have been made between 1998 and 2009, and manufactured in the company’s Borup factory, in Denmark.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening but nothing major.
