Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Stanwell’s Facet shape was originally released as part of the “Specialty” series, a set of pipes designed by some of Denmark’s premier artisans, each bearing ornate applications such as golden collars or horn ferrules. The Facet was one of several shapes designed by legendary carver Jess Chonowitsch for the series. It is, as the name suggests, a quarter-bent Dublin whose bowl and shank have been given six facets, creating a hexagonal theme (another shape designed for the series by Chonowitsch, the Hexagon, continued this theme further). This Facet wears Stanwell’s rouge finish, also known as the Bordeaux, and features a golden band, hence the RO in the stamping. The number “25” I am less certain about. As our Stanwell Dating Guide on the main MBSD details, this Stanwell dates from between the 1980s and 1998, as it features the make’s Made in Denmark stamp, as well as an ebonite stem.
This Stanwell is also completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating to help ease the break-in process.
