Stanwell Diamond Smooth Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

While Stanwell currently sells a dress line under the name “Black Diamond,” between the 1980s and the early-1990s, there was another line of a similar name: the “Diamond.” I assume the line was not sold for very long, as I’ve seen only a handful of these pipes over the years. Though this one doesn’t have a shape number stamped on it, it looks to be the 141, a tulip bowled billiard designed by Jess Chonowitsch. A personal favorite of mine, actually.

The condition is good. Some wear to the rim and minor handling marks.
