Stanwell Diamond 213 Smooth Facet Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

While Stanwell currently sells a dress line under the name “Black Diamond,” between the 1980s and the 1990s, there was another line of a similar name: the “Diamond.” I assume the line was not sold for very long, as I’ve seen only a handful of these pipes over the years. This one looks to be a 1990s make (and certainly pre-2010), as it is rendered in Stanwell’s shape “213” which debuted around that time. The 213 was originally part of the Sixtus series designed by Tom Eltang, whose shapes each had faceted, hexagonal shanks, and which also built on Eltang’s hex shank shape “190,” designed in 1992. While Sixtus shapes were originally exclusive to that series, some would later be re-introduced in separate lines, which is how this Diamond line variant will have come about.

The condition is great. Some inner rim darkening and an all but buffed off Stanwell “S” logo, but nothing major.
