Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Speaking of Tom Eltang, this particular Stanwell is an example of his shape “204,” designed at some point in the late 1980s, by my estimate. It is an eminently Scandinavian horn that calls to mind the work not only of Eltang, but also the “Olifant” shapes of freehand pioneers Bo Nordh and Sixten Ivarsson. Based on the stamping, this one looks to have been made between the 1980s and 2009, while production was still handled by Stanwell’s factory in Borup, Denmark.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original (albeit slightly flaked) bowl coating.
