Stanwell Buffalo 186 Sandblasted Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Speaking of the great Anne Julie, this particular Stanwell is one of her designs. It’s a little similar to her shape 35 bent egg, but is fuller in the bowl and has a round shank and saddle stem, rather than the 35’s oval shank and taper stem. It’s a stout, palm filling piece, and one which is an excellent representative of the Danish style from the 1970s onward.

The condition is very good. Some rim darkening and minor finish fading.
