Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

The “Brushed” line from Stanwell was one of the most left field additions to the make’s catalog in a long time. It’s a recent one and, as the name implies, it’s a line of pipes featuring wire rusticated finishes, along with a distinctive black and white color palette. While rusticated finishes are not uncommon in Danish pipe-making (though Stanwell only offered such finishes on very rare occasions), wire rustication is something typically found on mid-century Italian pipes, such as those of Savinelli or Brebbia, or perhaps English pipes, if we count post-transition Sasieni. More recently, wire rustication has found a home in Todd Johnson and Pete Prevost’s Briarworks and Moonshine makes (after acquiring the latter). This might well be the first time it featured on a Danish pipe. I’m not complaining, though— it looks sharp, no pun intended.

The condition is fair. The finish on the rim has been partly worn off from buffing and there’s a little darkening alongside it. Nothing that’ll stop the pipe from being a reliable smoker, though.
