Stanwell 204 Hand Made Horn, Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Speaking of Tom Eltang, this particular Stanwell is an example of his shape ‘204,’ designed at some point in the 1980s, by my estimate (this one looks to be a late 1990s make). It is an eminently Scandinavian horn that calls to mind the work not only of Eltang, but also the ‘Olifant’ shapes of freehand pioneers Bo Nordh and Sixten Ivarsson. The grain is remarkably good, even for Stanwell’s high standards, with flame grain surrounding its paneled bowl and bird’s-eye covering its rim. It is also surprisingly lightweight, at 40 grams, so veteran smokers may find it a comfortable clencher. On a last note, this pipe was made in Denmark, in Stanwell’s Borup factory, prior to 2010.
The condition is near-mint. It looks to have been smoked once or twice, but not more.
