Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Since 1979, Stanwell has released at least one (sometimes two, for the 1990s and early 2000s) annual Pipe of the Year, or Årspibe, as a way of celebrating another 365 days making great, Danish pipes. As with many Stanwell models, these pipes are typically designed by legendary Danish carvers. This Zulu was designed for Stanwell by frequent collaborator (and one-time employee) Tom Eltang, and features a crisp, ring grain sandblast and an engraved sterling silver plaque referencing the year it celebrates, 2003. As it is a 2003 make, it will have been made in Denmark, in Stanwell’s Borup factory, before the factory closed at the end of 2009.
The condition is fair. Finish fading and rim wear.
