Stanwell 20 by Sixten Ivarsson, Sandblasted Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates [SOLD OUT]

Description

Stanwell pipes have a long history, and Stanwell is one of the most important institutions in all of Danish pipe-making. Perhaps the most pivotal moment in the history of Stanwell pipes was the meeting of owner Poul Stanwell and legendary Danish master carver Sixten Ivarsson. Between the 1950s and the 1990s, Ivarsson created many iconic pipe shapes for Stanwell, changing the course of pipe design forever.

This shape 20 from Stanwell is one of Ivarsson’s most unique contributions to the brand. With a bowl like a boat’s hull, and a rarely used, special stepped stem, the shape 20 was designed by Ivarsson in the 1960s. It was discontinued only a few years later, however, making it an especially rare Stanwell shape that has not been re-released since.

During the shape 20’s production, Stanwell’s Ivarsson-designed pipes were crafted in the Stanwell factory by Ivarsson’s student, Poul Hansen. An  accomplished artisan pipe-maker himself, Hansen expertly reproduced Ivarsson’s designs for Stanwell, including this shape 20. The pipe features a crisp sandblast on all but its underside, and a hand-cut ebonite stem. In pristine condition, this 60-year old Stanwell rarity is a must for collectors of Danish pipes and for pipe art admirers alike.
