Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Despite the general downturn in pipe sales beginning in at the end of the 1970s, the next few decades would see, to my mind, some of the best new Stanwell shapes in a long time. And this was, of course, largely because Stanwell expanded its roster of Danish greats commissioned to create those shapes. The 191 is one of my own favorites from this period, taking the form of a short, stout bulldog designed by Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier, who at that time had taken full control of the S. Bang make. The only downside to this state of affairs is that, with a decrease in pipe sales forcing a decrease in overall pipe production, shapes form this time, including the 191, are far less common than many of those from the decades prior. It could also be the case that the owners of these pipes are less inclined to part with them—I know that I’m in no hurry to get rid of mine.

The condition is fair. Some darkening and a spot of charring on the rim, and some general finish fading.
