Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

It is clear that this particular Stanwell will have been made for an event of some kind in 1995, as Stanwell would often do. Perhaps it was for a slow smoking championship, or perhaps it was for the anniversary of a tobacconist—in this instance, I’m afraid I do not know. What I do know is that it is a relatively rare shape 178, a compact brandy shape with a paneled, ovaline shank, designed for Stanwell in the late 1980s/early 1990s by Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier of S. Bang. As it is a 1995 make, and as detailed in our Stanwell Dating Guide on the main MBSD Pipes hub, this pipe will have been made in Borup, Denmark, and its stem is vulcanite.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening and a couple of small, superficial, bowl scratches.
