Smith House Sandblasted Billiard w/ Boxwood Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Description

Taking their name from architect Richard Meier’s avant-garde homestead just off the Long Island Sound, Smith House Pipes are the creation of New York artisan Rich Rosselli. Like the Danish-American functionalists before him, Rosselli excels at creating modernized renditions of tried-and-true, traditional, Anglo-French staples. This he combines with novel uses of color and ornamentation, giving Smith House Pipes their acclaimed, signature aesthetic.

With all of the wild designs that have come out of Denmark and Danish-inspired pipe makers over the last 70 years, it’s easy to forget that some of the most profound developments in pipe making during that have come from the pursuit of the perfect billiard. It is a shape that seems to be as old as the briar pipe itself, yet it is one that would be returned to again and again not only by the great Anglophone and broader European factory manufacturers of the age, but also pioneering artisans such as Former, Jess Chonowitsch, Adam Davidson, and J. Alan. This one, from New York’s Rich Rosselli, follows that same path. It remains a billiard at heart—lightweight, ergonomic, and even retaining the shape’s historic slight forward cant—while adding more contemporary elements by way of a boxwood mount, a flared cumberland push stem, and a color pallette that is both striking yet simple.
