Description

Ser Jacopo is likely the most famous contemporary example of high-grade, workshop-made Italian pipes. It also belongs to a very special tradition in Italian pipe-making, having been established by Giancarlo Guidi and Bruno Sordini after the two had left another great Italian workshop, Mastro de Paja. Together, Guidi and Sordini created a brand of pipes that reflected their Renaissance sensibilities – even the figurehead of Ser Jacopo happens to be taken from a painting of a nobleman from centuries past – one that would soon become esteemed for creating unique and beautiful tobacco pipes that smoked just as well as they looked.

Pipe smokers have a vast vocabulary for the designs their pipes take. I’d like to think that, 99% of the time, if a pipe lands on my desk, I’ll know what to call it. But there are always exceptions, especially when it comes to artisans and artisan workshops. So, here we have an example of the latter, from Italy’s Ser Jacopo, and we also have an example of that mysterious 1%. It’s a great looking pipe, but I’m a little lost for words as far as descriptions go. There’s elements of the scoop shape to it (i’m going to put it in the “scoop category, in fact), but it also has a distinctly floral, or even fleshy, character, owing to a bowl that almost “puckers” as it reaches its rim.

This Ser Jacopo is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original box and sleeve.
