Ser Jacopo Spongia R2 Rusticated Bent Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
Ser Jacopo is likely the most famous contemporary example of high-grade, workshop-made Italian pipes. It also belongs to a very special tradition in Italian pipe-making, having been established by Giancarlo Guidi and Bruno Sordini after the two had left another great Italian workshop, Mastro de Paja. Together, Guidi and Sordini created a brand of pipes that reflected their Renaissance sensibilities – even the figurehead of Ser Jacopo happens to be taken from a painting of a nobleman from centuries past – one that would soon become esteemed for creating unique and beautiful tobacco pipes that smoked just as well as they looked.
In a previous listing, I gave a short, impromptu Latin lesson to help our buyers understand the reasoning behind Ser Jacopo’s nomenclature. For this one, I don’t think that will be so necessary. After all, Spongia is Latin for exactly what it sounds like: sponge. Spongia is Ser Jacopo’s series of rusticated pipes in a natural, virgin finish, much in the same vein as Savinelli’s Punto Oro Corallo or Castello’s Natural Vergin pipes. I would imagine that, like those pipes, this Spongia will develop an interesting, golden patina over its lifetime by absorbing part of the smoke that passes through it. The shape I would describe as a bent apple, but it has a little of the hawbill to it too.
This Spongia is completely unsmoked, and comes with its original box and sleeve.
