Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
I’m used to Sean Reum finding inspiration in the great Danish pipe makers, both old and new, but this pipe caught me by surprise. That’s because I’d count it as being, essentially, a “Dan Shape”—albeit with a couple of distinct twists. For those unaware, the Dan Shape was a series of shapes made at Denmark’s historic Pibe-Dan (later Pipe Dan) workshop in Copenhagen. Largely designed by Gert Holbek, in collaboration with Pibe-Dan’s owner H. Dan-Christensen, the Dan Shapes were defined by their “checkmark” style posture, often having tall bowls that were intersected by their shanks and stems at around a 45 degree angle, to ensure that the chamber stayed vertical while the pipe was being clenched. This one is remarkably similar to something like a Dan Shape Ambassador, though in this instance Reum has swapped the Ambassador’s stacked vase bowl with a similarly stacked Rhodesian one. The pipe wears a natural, Tanshell-esque ring grain sandblast and is complemented by a much more modern, green resin stem.
