Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
This particular Reum features some things that have come to define the Montana artisan’s pipe-making over the last few years, and others that are more novel to his catalog. The former includes his explorations of unconventional color combinations, something that artisans like Reum have embraced over the last half decade to brilliant effect. This one combines a burgundy stain with a black ebonite ferrule and royal blue ebonite stem. It also includes his use of softer sandblasts to create distinct bowl textures, with this pipe having a leathery surface that further contrasts with the sheen of the pipe’s ebonite components. The more novel inclusion is Reum’s use of the aforementioned ebonite ferrule which, in addition to adding an overall sleekness to the design, creates a distance between its burgundy and blue hues, acting as a mediator to their opposition.
