Description

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

Though his smooth pipes are sublime, Sean Reum is quickly rising through the ranks to become one of America’s premier artisans when it comes to sandblasted finishes. This is in part due to how attentive he is when it comes to briar. As any pipe maker will tell you, it is impossible to predict with absolute certainty what one will find when sawing and turning a block of briar—no matter where it comes from—meaning that one has to adapt to whatever fate one’s way. Reum has met this challenge by developing a variety of finishes, including a number of sandblast techniques of varying intensity. Some pipes are given Reum’s signature, light “Eggshell” treatment, whereas others, like this one, are met with a firmer hand. It seems the block this pipe came from had particularly consistent growth rings, which Reum has brought into relief expertly, recalling something like a Danish-inflected mid-century Tanshell (if Tanshells also featured hand-cut cumberland stems, of course).
