Sean Reum Pipes, Textured Bent Egg Handmade Briar Pipe, New [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
It is not every day that something really new appears in the pipe world. Granted, there are always more or less new shapes, or at least new interpretations of older shapes. But with so many decades of history to artisan pipe-making, it is difficult to create something genuinely novel. That’s why I like Sean’s work – he spends a lot of time thinking about what he can do to innovate. For this pipe, the innovation is its finish. Reum calls it ‘satin eggshell’ – while it may look like the pipe is simply smooth and contrast stained, it is also very lightly sandblasted. The result is a finish that – as the name suggests – resembles eggshell both in look and feel. It’s been very successful so far and I can see why.
As for the rest of the design, it’s a modern classic, the Danish bent egg. The stem is Alumilite resin, while the decorative shank ring is black sand cumberland. The pipe is also incredibly light – rare for a Danish egg – at only 34 grams.
