Sean Reum Pipes Large Partially Rusticated Bent Egg Estate Briar Pipe [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
I’ve noticed that it is very uncommon to come across estate pipes from Montana artisan Sean Reum. Presumably this is because most of those who own Reum pipes – with myself being one of them – don’t give them up lightly. This pipe came to us from our estates trade in program, which were grateful to have.
Onto the pipe: as someone that has followed Sean’s work for many years, this looks to be from around the time that Sean was developing his signature ‘chipblast’ rusticated finish. As Sean is always stylistically on the move, he doesn’t make many pipes in this finish anymore, so this is an opportunity for someone to pick up a fairly rare specimen. It looks to be a hybrid between a Danish egg and a similarly Danish swan, with the sides of its thick bowl rusticated, and its fore, aft, and underside smooth polished, revealing some particularly attractive grain. The pipe is also a rarity in that it comes with a mint-green lucite stem.
The condition is great. The finish on the rusticated portions may be a tad faded, but the pipe has otherwise been immaculately preserved.
