Sean Reum Contrast Sandblasted Rhodesian Handmade Briar Pipe, New
Out of stock
Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
As someone who has followed Sean Reum’s work for many years, I’m always excited when the time comes to receive a fresh batch of his pipes. One of the main reasons for this is that I can never quite predict what kinds of shapes and styles he’s going to turn his hands to next. This Rhodesian in particular caught my attention this time. It has a distinctly maritime feel to it, evocative of some of Poul Ilsted’s pipes, but with a slightly softer, more compact figure. So, while it has an assertive side profile reminiscent of a ship’s bow, the more organic lines of the bowl allow for the ring grain of the sandblast to slowly emerge from its base before culminating at the bead-line. As ever, the color combination is novel but surprisingly effective. Burgundy and sea green ebonite? Turns out, those pair very nicely indeed.
