Description

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

This particular Reum is from his earlier years, though it nonetheless showcases the same talents that make him such a hot property today. Like his contemporary work, it features a superb, ring grain sandblast and contrast stain combination, making the briar patterns really “pop” visually. A more distinct and interesting aspect about the pipe, however, is its design, with Reum looking to have taken cues from Ireland’s Peterson pipes, rather than the Danish and Danish-American style his pipes typically embody today. In fact, it almost looks like a more upmarket System pipe. Given that this will have been made before Peterson debuted its Rua and Iora finishes, it appears that Reum was very much ahead of the curve—just as he continues to be.

The condition is very good. Some darkening and finish fading on the rim.
