Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
Acorns are a recurring motif within Sean Reum’s work, and one of the things I like the most about his pipes is that, even though he must have made a hundred acorn shapes by now, each of them is different in some way. This is not just evident in the novel color compositions he chooses—though this one certainly is that—but in the very form the acorn takes. This one is, oddly enough, somewhat reminiscent of a hawkbill, while retaining the signature bulbous, “footed” figure of Reum’s favorite nut. It’s an assertive rendition, though one moderated by a simple, black ring grain sandblast, and a plum ebonite stem, giving the overall design a bold but grounded feel.
