Scott Klein Sandblasted Tomato Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

American artisan Scott Klein spent the first part of his working life as a tradesman in various fields. As a student he had been keenly interested in design and manufacture, and after graduating he spent time working in construction, as a woodworker, and as a painter. In 2009, Klein was introduced by an extended family member to Russian-born master pipe-maker Alex Florov, who took the 20 year-old Klein on as an apprentice in his own craft. Though hesitant to take on any kind of student at first, Florov was ultimately swayed by Klein’s talents, imploring him to become a professional pipe-maker.

Showing off some clear inspiration from the Danish Ivarsson (think Nanna and Lars more than Sixten), this distinctly broad and bulbous approach to the tomato is a relatively recurrent one within Scott Klein’s catalog. And I can see why he would keep returning to it: it’s a wonderfully organic, basic shape, one that works especially well with a deep sandblast. Regarding the latter, the breadth of the form and the depth of the finish actually end up accentuating each other in a striking symbiosis.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating to help ease the break-in process (though this coating has flaked a little over time). It also comes with its original leather sleeve.
