Description

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

There are few pipes in Savinelli’s catalog – old and new – that are as sought after as the Punto Oro in the Corallo di Mare finish. It might best be compared to Dunhill’s Tanshell line; both employ a virgin briar finish with very minimal staining, which over time, much like a meerschaum pipe, develops a bronze patina; both are rare, though the Punto Oro Corallo is rarer, being a subset of the Punto Oro line, rather than a line unto itself; and both often have pipe-smokers jumping over each other to get one. While the Tanshell is sandblasted, however, the Punto Oro Corallo is rusticated in the manner of sea coral, as the name suggests.

The condition is fair. The pipe has developed a warm patina over its lifetime as a faithful companion. There is some light rim darkening and there are some handling marks, including a dark patch on the right side of the bowl. The interior chamber is sound, which makes me think this is simply where the pipe was held. I’ve adjusted the price just in case I’m wrong, which should make this the most affordable Punto Oro Corallo on the market.
