Savinelli Punto Oro Corallo 8010 KS, Rusticated Bent Billiard Estate Briar Pipe [SOLD OUT]

Description

1It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously produced high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

There are few pipes in Savinelli’s catalog – old and new – that are as sought after as the Punto Oro in the Corallo di Mare finish. It might best be compared to Dunhill’s Tanshell line; both employ a virgin briar finish with very minimal staining, which over time, much like a meerschaum pipe, develops a bronze patina, as this one has; both are rare, though the Punto Oro Corallo is rarer, being a subset of the Punto Oro line, rather than a line unto itself; and both often have pipe-smokers jumping over each other to get one. While the Tanshell is sandblasted, however, the Punto Oro Corallo is rusticated in the manner of sea coral, as the name suggests. This one is rendered in Savinelli’s 800 KS shape, a fairly large, quarter-bent billiard, though one whose bent is reserved solely for its vulcanite stem. It’s a healthy 6 inches, but at a mere 42 grams, it should clench quite comfortably for veteran smokers.

The condition is very good. As mentioned, the pipe has developed a natural patina from being smoked previously, but this only lends further character to it. As the shape code is 4 digits, this pipe will have been produced prior to the 1970s, so it makes sense given its 50+ year age. There’s a little bit of rim darkening, but this is merely superficial.
