Savinelli Gigantes 111 EX Rusticated Straight Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously produced high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Savinelli doesn’t make the Gigantes series anymore, but if you’re a speaker of a romance language, you can probably guess the reasoning behind the name. Funnily enough, ‘Gigantes’ isn’t an Italian word. Gigante is, which, as one expects, means ‘giant.’ But Gigantes is, instead, a transliteration of the Ancient Greek Γίγαντες, where it named a mythical race of strong, god-like creatures. So, it’s understandable that the Savinelli Gigantes aren’t the largest, magnum-sized pipes. Instead, they’re solid, sturdy pipes, ones that will probably survive their owners. This one is a large, straight billiard, not unlike Dunhill’s Large Billiard Slender (LBS) pipes, but unlike Dunhill pipes, this one is dressed in an earthy, hand-rustication, along with a clay- or terracotta-like stain.
Unlike most Savinelli pipes produced today, the Gigantes, as with this one, had vulcanite stems, rather than acrylic. This Gigantes also happens to be completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to ease in its first smokes.
