Description

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

While “system” pipes are most commonly associated with the Peterson System series, Savinelli has its own interpretation of that basic idea, with a distinct twist. Like Peterson’s System, Savinelli’s Dry System features a reservoir at the base of the shank that collects moisture and prevents gurgling. It also features a stem that angles smoke upwards into the user’s mouth to mitigate tongue burn and tongue bite. But the Dry System also features a 6mm bore stem, specifically to accommodate a balsa filter. This makes for an arguably even drier smoke, leading the Dry System to become a cult favorite among Savinelli smokers. Judging by the four-digit shape code, this looks to be an older, pre-1970 Dry System model (though please do correct me if I’m wrong on that), taking the form of a large bent billiard with a very Italian, light blonde stain.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and minor handling marks. The pipe comes with its Dry System box, which is a little time-worn, but nonetheless intact. As mentioned, it is chambered to accommodate 6mm balsa filters, but will perform perfectly well without one.
