Savinelli Capri Root Briar 708 EX Rusticated Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates
Out of stock
Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Though now long out of production Savinelli’s Capri lines were a staple in the make’s catalog for quite a while. Likely inspired by the successes of Castello’s Sea Rock finish (indeed, the Capri’s predecessor was the Rock Grain, which I seem to remember caused a legal dispute with Castello), the Capri was Savinelli’s own interpretation of that great Italian tradition of stony, pebble-dash rustication. This one looks to be from the 1970s or 1980s, and is an example of the Capri Root Briar variation, which had a dark, near-black stain. This one is rendered in Savinelli’s seldom-seen 708 EX (extra large) Lovat, boasting an exceptionally large chamber and a form that accentuates its stony finish even more than usual.
The condition is good. Some general finish fading and a professionally cut replacement stem by Briarville.
